This is the time of year when people make “new years resolutions. ”  I read an interesting article that talked about the difficulty of breaking bad habits.  Effective delegation is a good habit that yields top results.  Poor delegation is a bad habit that yields less than satisfactory results.

To build good habits around effective delegation, managers need to heed the repeat, repeat, repeat mantra.  As a starting palce, there are five basic techniques to frame good delegation”

  1. Plan every important project or assignment thoroughly
  2. Think ahead of time about how you will delegate each assignment to each unique person.  Look at how the assignment will be received through the lens of each employee.
  3. Delegate the What, How, When very clearly
  4. Set check-points and follow-up for status reports
  5. Celebrate success

Work to repeat these steps every single time.  this would be a big pay-off New Year’s resolution.
