This is the time of year when people make “new years resolutions. ” I read an interesting article that talked about the difficulty of breaking bad habits. Effective delegation is a good habit that yields top results. Poor delegation is a bad habit that yields less than satisfactory results.
To build good habits around effective delegation, managers need to heed the repeat, repeat, repeat mantra. As a starting palce, there are five basic techniques to frame good delegation”
- Plan every important project or assignment thoroughly
- Think ahead of time about how you will delegate each assignment to each unique person. Look at how the assignment will be received through the lens of each employee.
- Delegate the What, How, When very clearly
- Set check-points and follow-up for status reports
- Celebrate success
Work to repeat these steps every single time. this would be a big pay-off New Year’s resolution.
