One of the true hallmarks of high performance business units is the culture of innovation. For managers and leaders to achieve high levels of effective delegation and leadership, everyone must innovate. Innovation drives business growth. Innovation beats out the competition and gets to a better result. managers must manage innovation.
So, how what does innovation add and how do you manage to it?
In a recent article in the July/August edition of Discover magazine, there was a reference to a phenomenal scientific breakthrough. It just so happened that during a “routine experiment” that dealt with the ongoing research into the zero gravity of outer space. These NASA scientists “levitated a mouse using superconducting magnets!” I don’t know about you, but that is the thing of science fiction. the point is, the scientists were continuing to research ideas and out of that came a really fantastic result.
In a business organization, where a culture of innovation exists, the mere fact of continual research, thought and this creativity can yield a spectacular break-through. People love to be innovative. Business units build terrific team-work where challenged to innovate. The success and competitive position of companies is tied to innovation, big or small.
The company who consistently and doggedly innovates, will earn it’s top spot and come into competitive power, faster than any other process. When challenges face the company, where obstacles to progress occur, a business unit steeped in innovation as a regular core competency will rise to the occasion. So, what are s few key things managers can do to foster the “innovation culture?’
- Speak innovation. In every meeting, contained in every newsletter, in every casual business conversation and in performance reviews, talk about the need for innovation. make “innovation” a watch word for the business.
- Challenge people to innovate. Get your team energized around finding new and better products, services, processes, etc. by being really innovative. When you delegate an assignment or start a project, build the innovation challenge into the activities. Create contests or competitions around innovating a new idea.
- Reward innovation. If you want focus and attention on the importance of consistent innovation, then recognize and reward creative ideas of any kind. Let people know how much their innovation can help the organization. Recognition is important. Rewards are even stronger. During performance reviews, point out where the employee contributed innovation.
The truly innovative business is a competitive business. Innovation creates excitement. Managers need to help their team to expand their efforts and their abilities to match up with the innovative imagination of the your business unit. Find your top innovators and ask them to mentor new employees around the culture of innovation. For the successful business, innovation can levitate the capacity of the team to succeed.
