Encouraging Creativity Is A Managers Productivity Booster

One of the most important aspects of effectively managing a work group or business is to foster innovation. This can be  tough in the face of pressing deadlines and heavy work loads. This basically requires that a manager empower their team to approach innovation in all their work efforts. It means  encouraging “creativity on the part of all members of your business team. I mean everyone. You just don’t know where the next great idea will come from.

Most mangers encourage creativity, right? Wrong!

Most managers get so caught up in the “process” that they inadvertently by-pass creativity needs and innovation. Every manager wants innovation, to stay competitive, but it gets  over-looked. A better management skill is to encourage creativity in most projects and assignments.

Let’s face it…a manager has a real responsibility to get things done, to execute. Outstanding leaders learn to balance the practical reality of execution with what I like to call  the empowerment of innovation. Certainly, the amount of   freedom a manager gives an employee or team will need to vary depending on the task or assignment. If you are facing a crisis…solve the problem. There may be opportunities to discuss creativity  in the post-project review. When communicating a delegated project or assignment, the manager utilizes all the Management by Delegation techniques such as; the What/When/How and visual delegation methods. Then, the manager  can add some “innovation” empowerment.

Once a manager’s team begins to understand and believe that innovation is valued and encouraged, the great ideas will  begin to flow. The manager and the team can then review them, discuss them, pull them apart, test them and gain new innovation. Who would your rather work under, a manager who is just process focused or one that creates excitement in the business unit’s work by empowering innovation?
