Technology Software Help for Career Development

In today’s competitive world, the idea of employee and individual career development assessments may seem like a nice thing to do when you get time, right? That said, utilizing career development software resources and building training around the needs of the organization is a proven productivity booster.

To help busy managers and business owners solve this problem, I’ve researched  5 different free and paid approaches to skills assessment software to help speed up and automate much of the work. To make your research easy, I’ve described each tool and provided links to these 5 resources.

We will focus this article on software enablers to help with your professional development but it is also important to point out that this can be started as a manual process. For example, a manager seeking to do a skills assessment for their team can do so following simple steps.  In the video below you will see a quick demo of this in action.

Utilizing Development Software for Career Assessment

Example 1: Suppose you are trying to assess computer skills for yourself or for members of your business unit. If this is an important function for managing or employee responsibilities, significant improvement can be made by starting with an assessment. You will find a Free-trial version of this at Tosa.

Example 2: Skill building evaluation for a managers staff in aeas such as office skills, clerical and administrative skills, software, etc. can elevate the team’s performance with training that follws the assessment. You can find resources in this area at OPAC – Office Profeciency Assessment Certification.

Example 3: Recruiting the Right Talent – we believe getting “the right people on the bus” is a significant factor in the success of any business unit. There are many miscues and risks in hiring the right people. If you can ust software to support your recruiting selection the results can be dynamic. You will find qualit resources at iCIMS – Talent Manager

Example 4: Creating an Employee Assessment tailored specifically to your team or business unit is among the easiest and most valuable approaches for managers, executives or business owners. You can have employees do a “self-assessment” on the exact skills you want in your business unit and combine that with your assessment of each employee on the same skills. A strong resource for employee self-assessment can be found at where you can also see a clear demo of how this software works.  Here is a sample representation of just one report that can be generated as a heat-map of the team:

Example 5: Custom Set-up Skills Assessment -To evaluate your skills or that of members of your team, an organization called Tech Orange  provides a free skills assessment evaluator that has flexibility and management reports. This can help with both employee development and with self-assessment. You can compare employees, rank them and create the basis for training and development. With Skills Evaluator you can easily evaluate employees and/or position candidates’ skills. Take a look at TechOrange.

Managers and business owners who are concerned about improving individual and team performance need to focus on the individual level and utilize career development software resources to have a long term impact on business unit performance.
