What Reason Do You Have for Not Delegating?

In a recent article, there was an interesting discussion of the various reasons managers give for not delegating assignments to their staff.  Instead, they do the work themselves.  My question is, are you a manager of people or the usurping their work opportunities?  It’s a training and ego issue.  Your job as a manager is to coach people and see that they are trained to do the work at hand successfully.  If a manager does not give their staff assignments that are properly in the scope of their responsibilities because they are not trained, you are to blame.

If you decide to do the work yourself because you can do it better, you have failed the basic test of being a manager.  One of the core skills of successful managers and executives is their willingness to be patient, help people to grow and nurture their advancement.  It is so critical to the growth, moral and achievement of your team or business unit that they be given the training, the trust and the chance to take on work assignments under your careful management.  Grow your people.  Grow your career.
