Importance of Career Development Planning Initiatives

The opportunity for career advancement through Professional development opportunities is practically mandatory in the rapidly changing business climate today. We are not talking here about a one-off class or a single workshop. The type of life-changing professional development plan referenced here is based on long-term career development and planning program.

The best professional development programs are based on a focused assessment to uncover growth opportunities.  Once the developmental needs are identified, sourcing development training opportunities is the next step.
There are many different resources such as; a university academic course, to career services available from a wide variety of providers. It will be important to clearly understand if these providers fit your unique needs as to their philosophy, program content, reputation and type of training  experiences.

As a reference here, I have listed some of the more common training and development methods:

  • Professional Consultants – this method utilizes the programs developed by career development professionals. The opportunities vary widely but for more senior and experienced people, this may be a method that is well-aligned for success.
  • Mentoring Method– one of my preferred methods which allows a less experienced person, or one lacking an important skill or professional experience, to learn from someone who has “been there done that.” If the relationship and chemistry are right, this method produces dynamic results.

Career development and planning is a broad area that covers a myriad of skills, capabilities and experience with may methods and approaches.  For someone committed to professional growth and development, and willing to undertake the responsibility for developing most of their own unique program, there is one core philosophy:

An individual committed and focused on professional development as a life changing journey in lifelong learning and growth that builds their own skills and abilities.


I believe that almost all development is self-development.  Can you imagine anything much more important to your ultimate success than taking charge of your own development?
