For any manager in toda’sy fast paced, high-productivity stressed world, delegating work and managin projects and assignments, building information rich project development into management has become an absolute requirement. What is “information-based” management and how does it work?

Data Creates Value

In a recent Blog on Evidence Soup (www.evidencesoup.com) about Stephen Lohr’s New York Times discussion, Stephen discussed Erik Brybjolfsson’s research on “Data-Driven Decision Making”, there is clear direction for the rest of us in the trenches managers. Their studies have concluded that managers can achieve over a 5% increasein productivity with more attention to information and data. Inthe larger picture, a 5% boost over time is huge.

So where can managers go with this concept? On a practical day-to-day manager’sjob, what can they do right now to move in this direction of information basedmanagement? Plenty.

When planning and executing work assignments, particularly during the development and research stage, managers need to emphasize the need to dig deaper into all the available information and resources that could help enrich the project plan or directional decision making. Get as much data, information and resources possible. Don’t just settle for a surface and cursory look at data. Insist that the business unit, and individual assignments requiring development research for decision making, dig as deep and wide as possible for references that willenhance the quality of the project or decision

Coaches Comment: Example.  “Jon…when laying on the draft on this assignment, makesure to get as much data/information/references as possible. whenyou submit your draft on (date) please include a copy of all the pertinent information you have collected supporting this project.”

Can any manager pass up a 5% increase in productivity by not insisiting on deeper data & information research?
