Understand Your Employees View when Delegating

One of the core principles of management by effective delegation is to “delegate through the lens of the employee.”  This is a very powerful tool but one that assumes the manager knows the employee well enough to see things through the employees perspective.  This is easier said than done.  If the manager of the employee is new to the business unit/team, the manager is starting from scratch.

One effective technique is to simply start with this basic question…”what is it I don’t know about this employee that relates to the work or responsibility at hand?”  For example, “what related prior experience does this person have?”  Start with the basics and work forward form there.  The manager can make notes to regarding the important skill and knowledge the employee does have and any areas that the employee does not have (training opportunities).  This begins the relationship building process and enhances the managers ability to see the employees perspective.
