What is successful delegation management really?
August 30, 2010. As I come across articles and Blogs recently, I keep see a recurring theme regarding an advantage to the Manager who delegates of saving his or her time. Is that really what effective delegation is about? I really don’t think so. There is a misunderstanding here about what it is a successful manager is supposed to do. To be successful, a manager-manages-people.
Delegation is a core competency of managers and Executive who are expected to reach important business objectives by executing projected and assignments. Delegation is a primary responsibility for anyone who manages a group of people. It is not a convenience for the manager to save them a little time. Managing through effective delegation is job one!
Delegating specific work assignments is what they do. A really successful manager or executive “delegates work assignments” because that processrepresents the tool they must use to coordinate the efforts of a group of employees around the action steps of a project plan. The majority of a managers job functions are to plan projects or assignments, delegate specific action assignments and manage the execution of the Plan.
3 Cornerstones for Management Success
Let’s look more closely at these three cornerstones of manager success:
- A manager or Executive gets or created Project Assignments needed to reach a company objective. This involves having a very clear picture of the final results needed and a detailed project plan with all the action steps needed to achieve the goal. These action steps become delegation assignments.
- Next, the competent manager uses skills, techniques and expereince to delegate the right assignment to the rigbht employee in the right way.
- Last, once the assignment is delegated, the manager must track, check, motivate and manage the completion of all Action Steps. This is managing the execution of the project plan.
This is not about saving the Manager time. The process of delegation is about coordinating a team of people around a series of well designed action steps and getting results. Getting important things done through people is what it is all about. Where the manager needs to save time is in executing faster, what I have coined as the “Velocity of Execution”.
The manager who can achieve results through effective delegation and do it faster is exactly what today’s business or corporation is seeking.
