Deciding how to Delegate
Clearly the process of taking on an assignment and managing your business unit to execute the work is a core competency for Managers. Whether the manager is deciding “What” to do or preparing to complete an assignment given to them, deciding what to do or how to go about it is the key. Such decisions can be challenging. There is a clear process for managers to follow that will help provide a “thinking framework.”
When preparing to delegate and manage an assignment, start with gathering alternatives to get the job done. Next, select the best alternative and set out the “How” standards for the specifications of the work. Now you can set up the “When” criteria that lays out the time-table to completion. This process does not take much time but is very often over-looked in the mangers rush to get started. This process is part of the larger skill set for effective delegation and can really make a difference in producing consistently superior results.
